PARENT SUPPORT WEEKEND
Come join what many adoptive
parents have described as a well-deserved get away. Once a year adoptive
mothers and fathers travel to the Kinard Conference Center for a weekend
filled with fun, relaxation, and to attend workshops specific to adoption issues.
While the kids stay home with a
caregiver or spend the weekend with friends/family, moms and dads are
fishing, taking a walk in the woods, and developing support systems. The weekend is
also filled with workshops on topics relating to parenting, adoption,
specific disorders or diagnosis, and community resources. It is always amazing to see the smiles on relaxed faces at the end of
the weekend. You won’t find a more supportive atmosphere anywhere!
There is no cost to attend this weekend
retreat. However, your children will not be able to attend with you.
Respite scholarships are
available on a first come first serve basis. The respite funds are set
aside to help families pay for childcare providers for the weekend.

RESPITE
Respite
is a short break from the work of family building in adoptive homes.
Children Unlimited can help by paying short-term child care expenses when
a family cannot afford them, find a camp or other activity to meet the
special needs of a child, introduce a family to other adoptive families to
coordinate respite, or identify a trained therapeutic provider.

LOVE & LOGIC
Love and Logic is a specialized 12 to 15 hour course that helps families, professionals and teachers deal with children who suffer from Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder or difficult behavior. These problems include lying, stealing, tantrums, power struggles, inappropriate behavior, aggression, manipulation and a host of other problems that drive both parents and professionals crazy. This craziness results when people who care and love a child are trying to help a child become a responsible and respectful human being. Classes can be tailored to meet a variety of needs, schedules and budgets. For more information or to be added to the Love & Logic mailing list please contact Debra Beecken at 803-217-3161 or email to: dbeecken@children-unlimited.org

TEEN ADOPTION RETREAT
Each summer Children Unlimited sponsors a weekend retreat for teens, ages 13-17, who have been adopted. The retreat is held on Lake Marion at the scenic Camp Bob Cooper in Summerton, SC.
Teens will be busy challenging themselves on a high ropes course & climbing wall, having fun splashing in the lake and jumping on The Blob (you have to see it to believe it…but it is so much fun!), and of course playing games and making crafts! Each retreat focuses on adoption issues such as communication, loss, trust, and attachment. This is a wonderful opportunity for teens to meet others who share their life experiences and understand the meaning of being adopted...many will develop life-long friendships!
